The Legend of Zelda

This was the first Legend of Zelda game that introduced all of the key elements of the game to us. The structure of this game is majorly the same compared to the present one, though it was a 2D game played from an overhead perspective, it laid the foundation for the entire series. From the first game only we had characters like Link, Zelda, and Ganon with the iconic Triforce and the land of Hyrule.

This game was a bit different from the initial one as Zelda games tend to focus on exploration and we had “Link” in the game attempting to save Princess Zelda, the Adventure of Link has a heavy emphasis on combat & spells and introduces RPG-like mechanics, letting Link earn experience to upgrade his abilities. Though the further games in the series did not have this kind of characteristics to it.

A Link to the Past in the Zelda games took the familiar structure of a popular NES game and expanded on it for new hardware. The series trademark: parallel worlds was the concept that was introduced in this game. The main focus of the game was Link traversing into two different realms(one light, one dark) by swapping back and forth to defeat Ganon.

This was the first portable game in the series that did not take place in Hyrule but on the other hand, in Link’s Awakening, we had a new island, called Koholint where the whole game takes place. The two important missing features of this game were that neither Zelda nor the Triforce made an appearance here.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

This is where Zelda made its 3D debut. Though the early days of playing the game on PlayStation and Nintendo were filled with awkward 3D experiences, Ocarina of Time came in as a confident and ambitious game. The 3D experience here made the open version of Hyrule, a joy to explore.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Majora’s Mask is also quite a different sequel from its predecessors. At first, it looks like Ocarina of Time, but later the game swaps the wide-open fields of Hyrule for the parallel land of Termina, where Link must re-live the same three days over and over. This game is known as a cult classic and the reason behind this was its smaller scope that moreover looked the same as the previous one.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages

When you play Zelda you will see that the Zelda games are often about interconnected worlds, and with Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, it came to a literal sense. Though both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages are separate in nature and take place in two different locations, they tell one interconnected story that you will be able to understand when you play both of them.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

The Wind Waker is one such game in the series that will be remembered for its peculiar look. The Gamecube debut for the series looks like a playable cartoon and it is all because of its cel-shaded visuals that eventually turn its watery version of Hyrule into a beautiful fantasy world.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures was a bonus when Nintendo ported A Link to the Past to the Game Boy Advance. It is a multiplayer game on the Zelda theme that was later expanded into the Gamecube game Four Swords Adventures in 2004.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

As we expect from Zelda that there will be a game from it that gives a huge world to explore but the case is totally different in the case of Minish Cap as it moves in a much smaller direction. In Minish Cap, Link has a titular cap, which turns the hero into a miniature version of himself. This lets the hero explore a new, tiny world hidden in Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Twilight Princess bought us a feature where the protagonist could turn into a wolf in a dark parallel world called the Twilight Realm. This was the first game in the series that was launched on Wii and it used motion controls, though a more traditional, controller-based version.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

When you play Phantom Hourglass, you will see that it keeps the same colorful look and aquatic theme, but on the other hand, it introduces a new control scheme that lets you draw a path for your boat on a map using the handheld’s touchscreen. Finally in the line, two years later it was followed by another similar DS game, Spirit Tracks, which swapped the boat for a train.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Later in the Zelda series, one thing that was made sure of is that Nintendo continued its quest to make motion controls an important part of Zelda with Skyward Sword. Here, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword required a special add-on, the Wii MotionPlus, that offers greater precision for virtual sword fighting.

Till the time The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds came into existence, the things in the game were somewhat twisted. When you play A Link Between Worlds, you will see that it takes place in the same world as its predecessor but the difference here is that it all happens a few generations later. An additional twist here is that it lets Link turn into a two-dimensional painting so that he can slide along walls to sneak past enemies and solve the puzzles.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

The Tri Force Heroes game is a collaborative game that works in a distinctive manner where three players need to work together to solve puzzle-filled dungeons. If we talk about the gameplay, you will see that it is one of the goofiest as well as most stylish Zelda games, till the release of this game, which lets you deck out Link in everything from a Goron suit to a princess dress.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is an action-adventure game that is set in an open world and here the players are tasked with exploring the kingdom of Hyrule while controlling Link. Here in this game you will come across nonlinear gameplay and that is because of the game’s lack of defined entrances or exits to areas, and encouragement to explore freely.
